Are you a lover of old movies? Have you ever wished you could improve the web or YouTube video resolution of those ones made with less than 720p cameras? If you have ever thought of ways to improve your video resolution while streaming your YouTube or web videos, here’s some good news for you.
Microsoft Edge browser recently received a new boost in the way it can boost its video while it is been streamed online. This improvement came through the help of video super-resolution algorithms which rely most on Artificial intelligence to bring this great improvement.
According to Microsoft company, the improvement will be seen under the following conditions:
- The device has one of the following graphics cards (GPUs): Nvidia RTX 20/30/40 series OR AMD RX5700-RX7800 series GPUs.
- The video is played at less than 720p resolution.
- The device is not on battery power.
- Both the height and width of the video are greater than 192 pixels.
- The video is not protected with Digital Rights Management technologies like PlayReady or Widevine. Frames from these protected videos are not accessible to the browser for processing.
Currently, enjoying the benefits that come with this improvement on the browser will be possible for window users, most especially those using the Canary Edge browsers. If you are using a laptop, you will need to connect your laptop through its charging cable directly with your electricity power socket to ensure that it works by the direct power supply instead of the battery.
You will also need to make some changes with regard to your Graphic Processing Unit (GPU) to ensure that is similar to the ones listed above.

The essence of this improvement is to help boost videos that were created with less than 720p. Therefore, it will only work for those kinds of videos and not those that are more than. It is important to note that the resolutions above 720p are above in quality and you may not have much to complain about them as you can clearly see what is written.
It will not also work with all videos as those that have both or either of their height and width less than 192 pixels will not receive this boost. However, the most important thing is that both the height and width should have values above or equal to 192 pixels.
Microsoft company in this edge blog noted that such improvement can affect some machines by slowing down their process. The recent improvement will be extended to other devices but it only started with windows and those that run on a canary browser.
The action of the Video super-resolution algorithm which is to upscale the videos, especially those within 360p and 720p has also brought other changes to contents as it works by removing blocky artifacts.
One good thing to note about this advancement in the Edge browser is that you can turn it on or off at will. This is because the HD icon will always be on display so you control the way the output of the video is.

While most people argue that the importance of this edge browser’s improvement had been defeated by the level of technological development which allows people to make videos having up to 4k resolution. However, it is important to note that some people are using old videos made with resolutions as low as 360p.
Also, with the restriction that it works only on resolutions below 720p makes it deficient for all – except that it can now allow your device to see a wider range of videos at a good resolution.
For example, you can see videos of higher resolution clearly due to the technology in your laptop whereas those ones your laptop cannot enhance on its own can be enhanced by the Canary Edge browser.
Conclusion on Edge browser video super-resolution algorithm
This improvement is still evolving as it is only available currently on windows. However, it is great!
